Remember the website Jean-Baptise Jung started called WPVote.com? During mid-2009, WPVote.com was the talk amongst WordPress bloggers. Why? Because it was a site built with the WordPress core as a digg-like site. This was a break through for those who were still doubtful of the power of WordPress as a CMS.
When Jean-Baptiste did not have time to keep up WPVote.com, he left it in the capable hands of Bill Gillbanks (@binarymoon on Twitter.) Bill is the guy behind Binary Moon and he has created several popular and sleek WordPress themes and plugins.
WPVote.com is a social bookmark site for WordPress related articles and has been open since August 2008. Surprisingly, for those who did not know, WPVote.com was not always run solely on WordPress. It was run on Pligg, which has known issues to be spammed. Anyone who runs large sites with members who have to sign up, this is a pain!

I hang out a lot in AboutUs’s chatroom where I help with pro follows, creating articles and adding tags. Sometimes, I find some really cool people who are promoting their websites. Today, I found one such individual and I asked them to send me an intro about their site so I could post it to Fan History’s blog. Their site focuses around sports and I’m a huge sports nut. A recent article in The Register called US music publishers sue online lyrics sites. TechDirt also covered this in their article Music Publishers Now Suing Lyrics Sites And Their Execs. One of the sites included was LyricWiki. Basically this lawsuit would shove the site in with those who burn and sell music without a license.
Also, recently Wikia acquired LyricWiki. As explained in their LyricWiki:Wikia Migration FAQ:
The dream will live on – Yay! Wikia has arranged a licensing deal so that royalties can be paid to music publishers, which will avoid the nasty risk of the site being sued out of existence. It’s good to know that our years of hard work won’t be evaporating any time soon! This is a gigantic relief for me and I’m sure many of you as well.

We’ve been busy watching our recent changes on Fan History. An incident recently came up and we had a fair amount of behind the scenes discussion on how to handle it. After exploring our possible actions, we analyzed where our desires to take these actions came from. They can best be summarized as follows:
1. Desire to thoroughly document a topic, be completely truthful, provide multiple perspectives and be as unbiased as possible.
2. Desire to behave ethically, enforce our policies in an ethical and consistent way, and to adhere to the norms of the community of which we are a member.
3. Desire to avoid drama, possible negative publicity for the wiki, and personal attacks aimed at our admin staff.

I love irc. I love irc.freenode.net. There are a number of wiki related chat rooms on there and a month or so ago, an acquaintence introduced me to yourwiki.net. It is a wiki hosting company that is run by a couple of friends. At the moment, they are pretty small and they aren’t focused on making money. Rather, they are focused on offering great support that being a small wiki host allows them.
yourwiki.net is a traditional wiki farm of sorts in that there is a shared user base across multiple wikis. This is similar to how PBWiki and Wikia work. This can be great for community building on your wiki because there is a larger pool of contributors from which you can edit.

Recently Facebook rolled out their new feeds, yep, feeds as in more than 1. One is the Live Feed which is somewhat like the old stream except you are informed of your friends following others and what they became a friend of. The other is the News Feed that publishes popular posts, at least for your viewing pleasure.
Other Changes:
1. Also, the Status update fix, which apparently does not work and supposedly allows you to restore your Facebook page to its older settings and look. Instead you are telling Facebook on only display status updates that include anything BUT photos, links, videos, and applications.
2. More than 250 friends and Facebook basically chooses who THEY think you might want to listen to.

Commenting on blogs can help increase your traffic in two ways: 1) Click throughs on your name or from links in your comment. 2) Search engines if the links are not rel=nofollow. For the second, the advice is that the more you comment on a diverse range of blogs, the more search engine juice you’ll get and the more visits from Google you’ll get. Bad SEO people encourage you to comment as much as possible where ever the links are rel=follow. What these bad SEO people fail to tell you is that doing so can actually hurt your SEO because you may end up on blacklist as a spammer. I don’t handle deletion requests anymore. (1) I do listen to our admins who deal with them. A couple of issues have come up. People have been contacting Fan History with misinformation regarding deletion requests. (2) So this post is designed to clear that up.
Fan History won’t honor deletion requests posted!
This is false. Fan History DOES honor deletion requests… so long as they are properly submitted. If you don’t follow this procedure, then the article won’t be deleted. This happens more regularly than people might think because people will just send an e-mail to delete@fanhistory.com . They don’t post an ADR and don’t answer e-mails we send them following up with their request. If they don’t follow the procedure, the article won’t be deleted. (3) This is pretty much how it is on most of the Internet: To get what you want, you need to follow the rules. If you don’t follow them, then you don’t get what you want.

I’ve been blogging about the pending demise of MSN Groups, and some about the replacements – most specifically Multiply and Windows Live Groups. Multiply because it is the chosen replacement for MSN Groups, and Windows Live Groups since it is Microsoft’s own answer to MSN groups.
So far nothing has come close to the versatility and ease of use that MSN Groups has had.
Nothing.
No other service allowed for custom webpages, for custom logos and buttons and separated messageboards. Nothing was as easy to use as MSN Groups. Just fill out the forms and bingo! You’re good to go. The webpage interface wasn’t exactly WYSIWYG, but it was close and allowed for far more colors than Windows Live Groups allows for (in fact, WLG doesn’t give you background colors for your discussion pages, which is the only place you can use HTML.

MediaPost is reporting that MySpace has come up with a new way of dealing with infringing fans. Instead of DMCA takedown notices, cease and desist letters, etc., companies can now overlay the content on your MySpace contributions with their own advertisements:
Once a site publisher enables Auditude, every piece of content gets a unique ID. First, a content owner has to supply Auditude with copies of all content it wants “fingerprinted,” and Auditude adds it to a database. Once deployed on MySpace, for example, the technology can scan every digital file queued for uploading to see if there’s a match within the indexed content. It can then take any action the content company prefers, including blocking the upload. MTV Networks is one of the first entertainment companies to sign up for the MySpace service – and it’s going the ad route for content from BET, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central.
